Progressive Dinner

Submitted by Bill Elder, Fundraising Chair, 36th District Democrats

>The idea is an old one: get friends and neighbors together for a common
>dinner and the socializing that inevitably goes with such an event.
>Rather than any one household having to bear the expense and labor
>involved in hosting the entire affair, spread the work, and fun,
>around. Progress from one house to another for a different part of the
>meal, while visiting and enjoying each other along the way.
>
>The 36th District Fundraising Committee took that fine old idea and
>updated it in the spirit of the old-fashioned get-together but with an
>eye to making some money for the District's activities. At the same
>time it was designed to be an outreach, a membership tool to draw in
>sympathetic Democrats who for one reason or another are not regular
>participants in District activities, except at election time.
>
>In hosting a part of the Progressive Dinner at his or her own House
>Party each host/hostess gets to make several important contributions
>all at the same time. Each gets to make an in-kind donation (of the
>cost of hosting a dinner for friends of their choice), to act as agents
>for the District in collecting donations at their parties ($36
>suggested--- but not limited
>to--- donation per person in our case, which also gets you into the
>Grande Finale, or $36 to get into the Grande Finale if you didn't
>attend a House
>Party--- your choice), to draw in, in an easy homey way, potentially
>new members for the District, and at the end of the evening, each House
>Party becomes a natural lead-in to a culminating collective event or
>Grande Finale. At the Grande Finale guest are invited into a single
>gathering, where they have dessert and wine, and rub shoulders with
>newly-declared candidates, who are ready to kick off the election
>season. Not all make the progression, but most do.
>
>The Fundraising Committee has only to provide desserts (all donated)
>and buy (we're working on this) champagne--- and of course find hosts
>for the House Parties. Expenses are minimal. The donations come from
>the House Parties directly and whole, that is with no expenses
>deducted. The scope of the event depends upon the number of House
>Parties undertaken, a freely expandable model. Each host is free to
>determine who and how many people are invited (generally 6-12+), what
>the format of the dinner is to be (backyard BBQ, pool party, or
>sit-down show-off), when are the best hours, usually just before the
>Grande Finale, held 7-9 PM, and how guest get from the House Party to
>the Grande Finale. (Renting or getting donated a party bus or two has
>been talked about--- but only talked about so far.)
>
>
>The 36th is fortunate in having a tradition where Larry Phillips, King
>County Council, has hosted the
>closing-of-filing/beginning-of-campaigning
>event, now called the Grande Finale. The turn out of Democratic
>candidates and office-holders was--- and usually is--- excellent. In
>our initial outing we had five House Parties and the Finale, with 92
>attendees, and grossed nearly $3,000. Our goal for election-year 2007
>is at least a dozen House Parties. We may need a bigger Finale venue.
